There are many places to collect. Have you been to, or planning on going to...
Copper Country Festival in Michigan’s N.P. August 8th to 13th 2011
or the Keokuk Geode Festival September 23-25th, 2011
or Searles Lake Festival, Trona, CA. October 8-9th 2011
I know people who are going to two of the places I listed. If you think you might like to also attend a festival and meet a fellow club member and perhaps have dinner together and discuss the pro’s and con’s of the collecting, just let me know. I can contact the members, and if they believe they can meet you there, you could get together at a club meeting and finalize your plans.
Perhaps you can’t make the festival but you might be on vacation near the festivals. There is a possibility you might still be able to meet with another rockhound and do some collecting together.
There is always the possibility that, having nothing to do with a festival, you are just traveling and might just enjoy the company of another rockhound on a dig. If you let me know, without printing names, I could write up something that a member will be in a collecting area with a general date. By doing that, other members might just change some of their plans and be able to meet you.
I know a couple of our members had made the trip to Tucson. They had a better time because they were able to meet. I wonder if there were other people that might have gone if they thought they would know other people there. All it might take would be an exchange of cell phone numbers.
So you are not making the trip this year, but you have some favorite collecting site there or on the way there. Would you be willing to share your site with a club member that might be driving there?
This might not work for someone that is planning to do some local collecting where the collecting date is very close to the time a trip was planned (I’ll have to think about that) but if you are making plans, let’s see if we can come up with a data base of personal collecting sites and match that with traveling plans of our members.
